Now part of the Greene King chain, the building was originally a Georgian mansion built in 1830, pulled down in 1876 and rebuilt in its current location brick by brick. It was converted to a pub by Vaux in 1964. The venue now has a reputation for quality food, with a separate restaurant, bar area, function room and outside smoking area with TV. The function room is licensed for weddings.

This Grade II-listed building is an architectural gem and features in CAMRA's National Inventory. Reopened after a refurbishment in 2014 brought out the features of the listed back bar fitting. The pub was winner of 2 CAMRA / Historic England Awards 2015 for best restoration and conservation. Beers on five handpulls usually come from north east microbreweries. The pub is next to the Empire Theatre and can get very busy around performance times. During 2021 the upstairs restaurant was converted into an entertainment space and now hosts a comedy club every other Friday and Saturday night with two shows per evening at 8pm and 11pm.. 10% discount off real ale for card carrying CAMRA members. One of Sunderland's largest range of cask beers can be found at this busy city-centre pub.In 2018 the pub celebrated 25 years inclusion in the Good Beer Guide. There are two separate rooms, with the smaller Chart Room quieter than the main bar. The pub is an enthusiastic supporter of North-East microbreweries, with up to eight guest beers usually on offer. Large distinctive city centre pub; the original building was called The Peacock from 1770 and renamed The Londonderry in 1834. The current grade II listed building dates from 1901 and renamed back to the Peacock in 2017. There is a Sunderland Historic Buildings blue plaque on the wall of the pub. Situated at the bottom of a hill adjacent to a once-bustling shipyard, this welcoming two-roomed pub oozes character. It has several open fires, polished wooden floors and beamed ceilings, and is decorated with wonderful old photographs and nautical artefacts depicting the industrial heritage of the area. The pub gets its name from the tough saltgrass that used to dominate the area before the shipyards. There are two real ale handpulls - house beer is Saltgrass Bitter. A large stage area has been constructed in 2020 for regular live music.

There are panoramic views out of the windows over the beach, and the pub is very well lit. There is a small stage for live music.
