This Grade II-listed building is an architectural gem and features in CAMRA's National Inventory. Reopened after a refurbishment in 2014 brought out the features of the listed back bar fitting. The pub was winner of 2 CAMRA / Historic England Awards 2015 for best restoration and conservation. Beers on five handpulls usually come from north east microbreweries. The pub is next to the Empire Theatre and can get very busy around performance times. During 2021 the upstairs restaurant was converted into an entertainment space and now hosts a comedy club every other Friday and Saturday night with two shows per evening at 8pm and 11pm.. 10% discount off real ale for card carrying CAMRA members.
