A fine Georgian building on the site of one of the old gates into Exeter, the pub has part of the ancient city wall in its cellar. There are three eating and drinking areas off the main bar, a cellar bar and a large paved and decked garden with its own bar in the summer. Beers on offerare Young's, with seasonal variations. Until 1960 the Mill on the Exe was a paper mill; the original water wheel used to turn the machinery is now a feature in the pub's garden. The old mill was converted into a pub, which was bought by St Austell Brewery in 1994. It is set in a beautiful location, with tranquil waterside gardens next to Blackaller Weir and the Millstone footbridge, and is just a short distance away from the city centre and rail stations. It has a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere, with two bars spread across two floors. boasting a total of nine handpumps, with St Austell brews, seasonal and guest ales, plus a selection of bottled beers, including 'Clouded yellow' on offer. Quality home-cooked food, freshly prepared and cooked to order, is served from noon to 9pm daily. Children are welcome. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome throughout the pub.

After several years of closure this city centre pub reopened in 2018, a single large room with one bar it serves between three to six cask ales. There are three, changing, gravity dispensed ciders which are located on the back of the bar along with a vast amount of taps serving keg / craft beer. Entertainment wise there is live music on Fridays, a quiz on Tuesdays and also a pool table that is free to use. Happy 'hour' from 4-6 every open day, and probably all Sunday.
