Located within the Washington Arts Centre, this light and airy cafe/bar offers a warm welcome to drinkers and food lovers alike. Up to eight handpulled beers, two real ciders, and one perry are available. An extensive range of food is served from noon till early evening. Booking is required for indoor dining with a two hour eating limit . Outdoor seating is within the spacious courtyard including a large marquee. Two popular beer festivals are held annually, on the Easter and August bank holidays.

Opened in 1894 as the Spout Lane Inn and renamed The Steps in 1976. The small, comfortable single room lounge bar is divided into two drinking areas; the walls are decorated with pictures of old Washington. Five changing real ales are on offer some of which are often chosen by pub regulars. Tuesday is quiz night, with free supper. There is live entertainment on the last Saturday of the month.. Historic inn overlooking the River Wear at the north end of Fatfield Bridge. Dating from 1827 this pub once included a brewery. There are two entrances ; the bar which has two handpulls serving Timothy Taylors Landlord and Hobgoblin Gold. and the other to a larger tastefully decorated lounge and eating area - good value meals are served every day. There is a a dummy handpull on the lounge bar. The pub opens daily at 11 am ( the bar entrance at noon) Karaoke features on Friday & Saturday nights with a quiz every Monday night. Originally built in the 1970s as the Washington Liberal club, then converted to Morgan's Wine bar in 1990 then Chevies in 1992.After a refurbishment reopened as Champs in March 2014. Tastefully decorated with comfortable seating areas. TV screens and sporting memorabilia dominate including a Yahama motorbike inside the front entrance. The sign on the front of the Bird Inn says 1915, but there is documentation that the first licensee was in 1890. The pub benefited from a major refurbishment in 2016. Wednesday night is poker night and a buskers night is held on Thursday. There is a small garden at the back of the pub which looks out over a large car park. Plenty of buses at Concord bus station nearby.

Built in the late 1970's as part of the development of Washington New Town, the Ox and Plough has been tastefully reburbished both outside and inside. The bar , with Pool and Darts, is to the right . To the left is a larger lounge and comfortable dining area. There is also a small stage for weekend live music. Handy for bus stops but note there is a bus only link outside, the pub car park being on the west side ( Raby Road). Note opening hours vary during the week.
