Alum Ale House

The Alum Ale House is situated on the south bank of the River Tyne, adjacent to the Ferry Landing and close to the Market Place. The open-plan bar, with its 10 real ales is the venue for a lively Irish music session on the first Sunday of the month. Most of the beers are from the Marstons group range.Note the large blackboard detailing beers available, style strength and price and the new style Hobgoblin handpull on the left of the row of other handpulls. There is decking and seating outside overlooks the river. Note no children allowed inside the pub.

Named after a local fishwife and smuggler whose husband and sons were press ganged into the navy. This is a local riverside pub not far from the Mill Dam and attracts a more mature clientele. The interior is divided into two areas, with large-screen TVs for sporting events. Sunday is Karaoke night.

The Harbour Lights is located in a dramatic location overlooking the Mouth of the Tyne and, North Shields Fish Quay. Real ale usually from one handpull and available from a Thursday and usually sell a cask by Sunday evening as Monday to Wednesday is quiet. Food is served daily with breakfasts from 9am although the bar doesn't open till 11am.. They now have a nice beer garden and there is a quiz on a Sunday. Music continues on a Thursday and Saturday evening.

The Maltings is located on the first floor of the building, above the former Jarrow Brewery. Take the staircase or lift to a partitioned room with a large central bar and plenty of seating. Most of the former decor remains and has 3 changing ales handpulls. Wednesday is quiz night and Thursday is Rock night. Underneath the Maltings, occupying the space once used by the former brewery, is a new bar called The Chameleon. This does not sell real ale.

Known locally as the Cri, The Criterion is an historic pub dating from the 1800's and which closed in 2012 and turned into a bookmakers. The first floor of the building has been completely refurbished to reflect how it looked in the past and turned into a medium size bar. There are two changing handpulls . The pub has started brewing their own beer There is an impressive back bar with large mirrors, two real fires and comfortable seating with some sofas. Note the clock above the exit door from the bar. Outside you can still see the old Teltey's pub signs. No food other than cheeseboards Access is via the entrance on Ocean Road and up a staircase. No disabled access. Pub is very close to the public transport interchange.
