Alum Ale House

The Alum Ale House is situated on the south bank of the River Tyne, adjacent to the Ferry Landing and close to the Market Place. The open-plan bar, with its 10 real ales is the venue for a lively Irish music session on the first Sunday of the month. Most of the beers are from the Marstons group range.Note the large blackboard detailing beers available, style strength and price and the new style Hobgoblin handpull on the left of the row of other handpulls. There is decking and seating outside overlooks the river. Note no children allowed inside the pub.

Greene King-managed pub a stone's throw from the coast and the finishing point of the Great North Run. The spacious, open plan pub has a raised dining area at one end and a games area at the other. Mainly a locals pub but also popular with families who come to enjoy the extensive food menu, which is served all day. There are 4 handpulls serving a mixture of Greene King beers and guests. The pub has an excellent outside area facing the sea with dining tables and dog watering bowls. There is a quiz every Sunday and Tuesday from 7pm and live music every Saturday from 8pm. There are bus stops on the coast road passing the pub as well as on Bamburgh Avenue .

Real ale usually from one handpull and available from a Thursday and usually sell a cask by Sunday evening as Monday to Wednesday is quiet. Food is served daily with breakfasts from 9am although the bar doesn't open till 11am.. They now have a nice beer garden and there is a quiz on a Sunday. Music continues on a Thursday and Saturday evening.

Most of the former decor remains and has 3 changing ales handpulls. Wednesday is quiz night and Thursday is Rock night. Underneath the Maltings, occupying the space once used by the former brewery, is a new bar called The Chameleon. This does not sell real ale.
