A popular small, multi-roomed real ale bar with no music and no games machines. The conservatory to the rear of the pub creates an airy space in contrast to the cosy bar areas and leads out to the pretty garden. Only two handpumps, but don't be fooled; there's an extensive range of well-kept Real Ales served direct from casks in the taproom. Look at the blackboards above the bar for a list of what's currently available. Regular favourites such as Adnams and Woodforde's are to be found alongside a changing range of ales from around the region and the country. There's also a small but carefully chosen range of Belgian bottled ales. The pub regularly stocks four or five real ciders. The beer selection usually peaks on a Friday evening (with up to 18 available) and then drops back to about half that during early weekdays. Bar snacks include scotch eggs (which have a widespread reputation) & pasties that are cooked on the premises. You're welcome to order a takeaway (not Friday or Saturday) and the pub will supply plates & cutlery. Please scrape your plates and leave them in the kitchen area afterwards. Always very popular and in the summertime many visitors head into the garden or onto the patio. Make sure to take time to explore the enamel signs and other artefacts scattered around the walls. It now provides "refreshments for the weary traveller & good quality bedrooms with en suite walk-in showers." Traditional food is served in the evening and a Sunday roast. Please be aware that although regular opening times for the pub are published outside the pub (and copied here), it has often been observed to be closed during those hours, so it's worth checking in advance before travelling any distance. Lord Nelson
81 Fore St, Ipswich IP4 1JZ
Set in a small part of the historic port area still remaining. It retains a half timbered front with dormer windows. An unusual gravity dispense system is used which incorporates a row of old wooden casks to good effect and guarantees a temperature controlled real ale. Since mid-2017 the pub has been under the same management as the well-regarded Manningtree Red Lion. Ales are currently mainly from Adnams, though the plan is to source more from local micros. Families are welcome to mix with an interesting and diverse clientèle which includes international travellers attracted from the rejuvenated wet dock and students from the new university campus. Booking maybe required for Sunday roasts and a curry night every Wednesday. The building dates from the 17th century, though the brick frontage was added in the 20th to aid cleaning up after the many floods that affected the area. Originally called Noah's Ark, the name changed in about 1800 when Admiral Nelson was appointed High Steward of Ipswich.
