Friendly pub that attracts a good mix of regulars and visitors to the region. It was built in the 1850s as lodgings for railway workers constructing the viaduct under which it sits, becoming a public house a few years later. The pub has recently been refurbished with a comfortable bar and lower dining area. It serves good quality home-cooked food 11.45am-9pm every day at reasonable prices, and hosts quizzes on Tuesday night with a free hot buffet for which prior booking is essential by phone or facebook.

A refurbishment has given this late-Victorian pub a smart makeover, but it remains little changed from when it was first built. As with all Samuel Smith's pubs, the noise comes from the chatter of conversation rather than from music or TV. The unusual A-shaped building comprises a cosy snug, a pool room and the main bar area partially divided by a fireplace. If you want to take a step back in time, this is the pub for you.

A Grade II listed pub, parts of which date back to the 15th century. In 995AD, Lindisfarne monks searching for a resting place for the body of St Cuthbert came across a milkmaid looking for her lost cow. She directed them to Dun Holm (Durham), and the pub is named after the historic animal. There is a small front snug with a larger lounge to the rear. An occasional guest beer is available.

The decoration, following a summer 2021 refurbishment, is retains a traditional feel, including many original features. There are also a range of photographs of the pub in the early 20th Century, including many from the Miners' Gala. A mixture of local and student clientele contribute to a sociable and friendly atmosphere. It is notable for serving Draught Bass as part of a selection of well kept ales. A well-liked pub in the city centre close to the Cathedral. Refurbished in 2014, the interior comprises a small bar and a larger back lounge. The pub was originally a haunt for 19th-century theatre actors and patrons, hence the name. Despite recent alterations and other ill-judged attempts at change over the years, it has largely maintained its character. It is very popular with locals and students, and there is folk music on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 8.30pm. Four real ales are available and pub grub is served Mon-Fri 11am-3pm.

Set in great position near the banks of the river Wear just outside the city centre, this Rugby Club provides a great pint and a friendly atmosphere. Visitors are made more than welcome. Lunch is always available on weekdays, as is the Black Sheep. Local branch Club of the Year in 2014. The hours given are the minimal ones and will vary when there are functions, events and matches, so its advisable to check. During the rugby season (Sep to May), the bar is also open 6-10 on Wednesday evenings and until 11pm on Saturdays.

Don't be put off by first impressions! This popular city-centre pub is frequented by quite an alternative crowd, but everyone is made welcome and the pub enjoys a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Under new management from July 2018, this is an attractive pub offering 2 real ales. The decor is excellent, including very comfortable soft armchairs and low lighting. There is a new, quirky vibe about the venue, and the management introduced a new menu along with a weekly quiz, music and gin tasting sessions. Definitely worth a try if you haven't been in for a while!

Situated opposite Durham University’s Bill Bryson Library, this pub closed in April 2018 in its former guise as the New Inn. It has reopened totally refurbished and with its new name in October 2018 and is selling cask ale (3 lines). It is independent and focused on local beers with a rotational keg line and a fridge with over 30 different local ales and craft beers. It is a food led, family (and dog!) friendly outlet with a section of the pub being a restaurant seating 30 people with table service. The rest of the pub comprises the bar/cafe area, where there is a separate “bar snacks” menu for those just heading in for drinks. It is open from 830am with an alcohol licence from 10am.

A changing range of beer and cider is served directly through a hatch from the cold-room. Handpumps have recently been installed, with gravity remaining an option. Trevs Bar is the college bar for Trevelyan College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Durham. In addition to their draught products, the bar stocks a wide range of bottled craft beers and ciders along with big whisky and gin ranges. During the academic year, the bar runs and is involved in a wide range of events - a weekly pub quiz on the Sunday, a beer festival in the summer, regular music nights and tastings are all part of the calendar. During the week daytimes, the bar is open only as a coffee bar, with fresh cake available daily. The opening times given refer to University term times, during vacations these will vary.

This attractive venue on Durham railway station's northbound platform is an interesting relaunch of the original 1872 Ladies' Waiting Room, out of use for many years other than as a storage facility. In keeping with the building's Grade II listed status the design is traditional, with Chesterfield-style seating, original floorboards and fireplaces, wood panelling and a dark-wood bar.
