It was built in the 1850s as lodgings for railway workers constructing the viaduct under which it sits, becoming a public house a few years later. The pub has recently been refurbished with a comfortable bar and lower dining area. It serves good quality home-cooked food 11.45am-9pm every day at reasonable prices, and hosts quizzes on Tuesday night with a free hot buffet for which prior booking is essential by phone or facebook.

Popular city-centre pub, reputedly named after the crescent-shaped bar that runs through it. The decoration, following a summer 2021 refurbishment, is retains a traditional feel, including many original features. There are also a range of photographs of the pub in the early 20th Century, including many from the Miners' Gala. A mixture of local and student clientele contribute to a sociable and friendly atmosphere. It is notable for serving Draught Bass as part of a selection of well kept ales. To the rear is a large beer garden that offers both covered space and a fine view of the river and Old Elvet Bridge.

Don't be put off by first impressions! This popular city-centre pub is frequented by quite an alternative crowd, but everyone is made welcome and the pub enjoys a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Under new management from July 2018, this is an attractive pub offering 2 real ales. The decor is excellent, including very comfortable soft armchairs and low lighting. There is a new, quirky vibe about the venue, and the management introduced a new menu along with a weekly quiz, music and gin tasting sessions. Definitely worth a try if you haven't been in for a while!

Situated opposite Durham University’s Bill Bryson Library, this pub closed in April 2018 in its former guise as the New Inn. It has reopened totally refurbished and with its new name in October 2018 and is selling cask ale (3 lines). It is independent and focused on local beers with a rotational keg line and a fridge with over 30 different local ales and craft beers. It is a food led, family (and dog!) friendly outlet with a section of the pub being a restaurant seating 30 people with table service. The rest of the pub comprises the bar/cafe area, where there is a separate “bar snacks” menu for those just heading in for drinks. It is open from 830am with an alcohol licence from 10am.

Trevs Bar is the college bar for Trevelyan College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Durham. Despite being the smallest College Bar, John's Bar is far from limited in its selection. Offering a permanent Real Ale and 2 Guest Ales, the bar and the Real Ale Society pride themselves on their selection and availability. In addition to the draught products, the bar offers a selection of bottled beers and ciders, and a decent spirit selection. Also available are the infamous college drinks; the Tripod and the Ginception...! During term-time, John's Bar hosts events for students including Quiz nights and Open Mic Nights in partnership with John's Music Society.
