Rumour has it Chester once had one pub for every day of the year, but we like to think we're the one that people prefer. Ours is the most popular pub name in the UK and we find we're pretty popular ourselves. Our characterful city-centre pub was built in around 1600 and its black and white Tudor-style façade has been welcoming visitors ever since. They say we have a haunted cellar, something to think about when we go down to change the barrels on our wide range of real ales. We'll certainly keep you in good spirits, so come in and enjoy well-pulled pints, pub-food with a modern flavour and a good helping of friendly banter.

Located just within the City’s Walls, the pub has seen many a visitor as it’s loved by both the locals and tourists. It is said that the Earls of Shrewsbury had leased it to an innkeeper on condition that a suite of rooms was always kept available for the Earl and his family. A drawing of 1820 shows it as the Bridgegate Tavern and it is believed to have acquired its present name soon after. Still containing its original fixtures, The Bear & Billet has subtle hints to its’ varied past (including the resident ghosts). Originally the town house of the Earls of Shrewsbury, the pub is also the birthplace of Beatles’ legend John Lennon’s grandmother. Spread out over 3 floors, the Bear & Billet offers a fantastic opportunity to hire the historic venue for your very own private function. With fabulous views of the City’s walls, the spacious top two floors offers the right amount of privacy whilst still enjoying the pub atmosphere.
