Cushioned seating and low lighting add to a cosy atmosphere. Craft keg and bottled beers available but cask was discontinued.
Red Lion
59 Northgate Street, Chester CH1 2HQ
Rumour has it Chester once had one pub for every day of the year, but we like to think we're the one that people prefer. Ours is the most popular pub name in the UK and we find we're pretty popular ourselves. Our characterful city-centre pub was built in around 1600 and its black and white Tudor-style façade has been welcoming visitors ever since. They say we have a haunted cellar, something to think about when we go down to change the barrels on our wide range of real ales. We'll certainly keep you in good spirits, so come in and enjoy well-pulled pints, pub-food with a modern flavour and a good helping of friendly banter.
Architect
54 Nicholas Street,, Chester CH1 2NX
The Architect is a classic pub restaurant within Chester's city walls overlooking the racecourse at Roodee. We are named in honour of Thomas Harrison, a prolific architect who designed the building as his own residence, along with designing Grosvenor Bridge and much of Chester Castle. The pub is a story of two halves: turn right through the glass connecting passage and the original Georgian building has cosy, domestic rooms that naturally lend themselves to a series of intimate dining rooms in classic style. Turn left into the new garden room and you'll find a spacious open plan room with a large bar at its heart and a buzzy, pubby feel to things, with glazed doors leading out to the dining terrace.
Goat & Munch
52 Garden Lane, Chester CH1 4EW
Chester's first micro pub set up in a former electrical appliance repair shop in the Garden Quarter - an area heavily populated by students. The bar is painted in blue and decorated with lots of wood including the bar front itself made from old pallets. Furniture includes Swedish high tables and chairs plus some bench seating. Venetian blinds keep out excessive sunlight while artificial illumination is provided by T-lights and filament bulbs. There is also a brighter side room with a sofa leading onto a unisex toilet. As for the beer, expect 3-4 real ales (plus craft keg and interesting bottles) - generally sourced relatively locally. Discounted beer prices on "Moshpit Tuesdays"!
That Beer Place
Unit A19, Chester Market, Forum Shopping Centre, 6 Princess Street, Chester CH1 2HH
Simple cheerful bar with orange seating in Chester's revitalised market place selling a variety of craft beers and artisan gins. Real ale is available in both bottle and key keg formats.
Bluestone
117 Christleton Road, Chester CH3 5UQ
New bar opened in the former premises of Rhino Coffee House located in a parade of shops in the Boughton area of Chester. The name Boughton is derived from Bluestone and this is thought to be the name of a boundary stone alongside the road, hence the origin of the bar's name. Inside there is a mix of wooden topped tables with either high stools or low-level upholstered bench seats. The clean lines of the restful colour scheme and subdued background music provide a relaxed atmosphere, assisted by the presence of air-conditioning for warm summer days. Three handpumps provide a choice of beers from local breweries and some further afield. There are 8 craft beer lines and a blackboard on the wall adjacent to the bar shows details of the 5 craft beers and 3 real ales currently available. Drinks menus are provided on the tables listing wines, spirits, including locally produced organic gins, current beers and a comprehensive selection of bottled/canned beers stored in fridges located in the bar area. Food offering at lunchtime is cheese or meat boards.
Brewery Tap
52-54 Lower Bridge Street, Chester CH1 1RU
The Brewery Tap is set an historic great hall, of medieval origin rebuilt in the 17th century (the external brick façade was added following the fire of London). Albion
Park Street, Chester CH1 1RN
Albion, translated to present-day terms, means ‘white’ and is often associated with all things English. The present day ambience of the Albion’s interior reflects this translation and has firm connections with the Great War going far beyond the modern ‘concept’ pub of today. Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester. Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War. Many a young lad would have spent his King’s Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.

Commercial Hotel
St Peter's Courtyard, Northgate St, Chester CH1 2HG
Tucked away at the rear of St Peter's church near the famous Chester Cross. A multi-roomed bar now primarily marketed with students and light night revellers in mind. The pub dates back to 1817 and was designed by prominent architect Thomas Harrison. Cask has made sporadic appearances on the bar. None on on last few passes and staff admit they don't sell enough of it so fair enough. Better none on than a stale one (or worse).
Cross Keys
2 Duke St, Chester CH1 1RP
This attractive red brick one-room pub was bought by Joules brewery in 2012. It has subsequently undergone a stylish refurbishment with oak floors and wood panelling throughout. Notable features are the etched mirrors and stained glass windows depicting other hostelries in the Joules estate. A large upstairs function room ("The Slaughtered Lamb") has received an equally lavish makeover while at the front is a small terraced veranda ideal for late afternoon sunshine. Pies are always available and a traditional roast on Sunday. The pub hosts a popular quiz on Thursday and live Irish music on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.
Bear & Billet
94 Lower Bridge Street, Chester CH1 1RU
Built in 1664 to replace a building destroyed in the Civil War, the Bear & Billet is one of Chester’s finest examples of a black and white half-timbered building. Located just within the City’s Walls, the pub has seen many a visitor as it’s loved by both the locals and tourists. It is said that the Earls of Shrewsbury had leased it to an innkeeper on condition that a suite of rooms was always kept available for the Earl and his family. A drawing of 1820 shows it as the Bridgegate Tavern and it is believed to have acquired its present name soon after. Still containing its original fixtures, The Bear & Billet has subtle hints to its’ varied past (including the resident ghosts). Originally the town house of the Earls of Shrewsbury, the pub is also the birthplace of Beatles’ legend John Lennon’s grandmother. Spread out over 3 floors, the Bear & Billet offers a fantastic opportunity to hire the historic venue for your very own private function. With fabulous views of the City’s walls, the spacious top two floors offers the right amount of privacy whilst still enjoying the pub atmosphere. The fantastic location and exquisite range of beverages & food paired with the friendly team ensures that every event, no matter what the size, is memorable for all the right reasons.

Marlborough Arms
3 St. John Street, Chester CH1 1DA
Small city centre pub exclusively serving Stonehouse beers. Quite spartan inside with green walls, bare floorboards, rudimentary murals, breweriana, careworn sofas and bench seating. Inverted barrels for stand-up drinkers. The odd pub name spelling is due to a signwriter's error that's stuck.

Popular venue close to the railway station. The exterior has a very unusual but stunning roof line and there is a small courtyard with picnic tables. Besides the cask, you'll usually find real ciders, plenty of keg taps and numerous bottles to add to your choice.
