In the 1970s, the name was changed to the Claregate and over time the rooms were amalgamated into two large but distinctive areas with seating arranged in bays. The dance floor remained underneath the carpet. In 2015, the pub was threatened with demolition and conversion to a nursing home, but an active campaign by the locals managed to secure an ACV and the closure was cancelled. In Spring 2017, a major refurbushment was carried out to change the Claregate to a Marston's Generous George brand. Although the emphasis is on dining, it offers a good selection of Marston’s beers for the local community. A Tesco local store is located on the large car park. The bus stops outside the pub.
Clarendon Hotel
38 Chapel Ash, Wolverhampton WV3 0TN
Banks's Brewery Tap located next to the Park Brewery, visitors' centre and shop and Marston's head office, the pub can be traced back to 1849 when it was considerably smaller. It was purchased by Wolverhampton & Dudley breweries in 1896 from Brindley Brewery of Burton Trent. In 1896 the upstairs billiard room was converted and extended over the next door shops. This was used for many years as the brewery board room. Although no longer used by the brewery the room still exists and along with a large function room is available for hire for meetings, parties etc. Over time various alterations and extensions to the rear have been carried out to create a number of extra rooms. These were converted into one room some years ago. The pub was refurbished in autumn 2016 which involved moving the island bar from where it was located for many years, and creating a number of separate areas leading off. These areas feature the brewing history of Banks's, Marston’s and the other group breweries. Note, Wolves fans enjoy a 10% discount on home match days on production of a valid season or match ticket. If it is an early kickoff at a weekend, the pub opens at 10am.

The entrance to the pub at that time was via the right hand side door into a corridor. It had two downstairs rooms the front more popular with the younger crowd with the bar servery in between, there was also an upstairs room used as a club room and later it was used for music and for hire. Despite its grade II listing in 1970 under the ownership of Bass a major refurbishment saw the downstairs rooms knocked into one and the bar servery moved to the right hand side of the pub taking up the corridor. At this time the entrance to the pub was moved to the left hand side door. After further alterations inside very little of the original build internally remains.
