New ownership has restored this to a local community pub owned by a local businessman. There are four darts teams, a pool team and a crib team too. There will be extensive refurbishment and renewal to a pub that was unloved by its previous owners Greene King. It is the only pub on the Ashdon or Radwinter side of Saffron Walden.
Cross Keys Hotel

Hotel that is over 850 years old freshly refurbished. The property was used as a base by Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War and reputed to be haunted by more than one friendly ghost. Now more of a town-center restaurant with accommodation and the bar is place you visit on the way to your food table. The new owners are Charles Wells and the appearance is now very improved from its previously run-down state. No bar area chairs but is still possible to get a real ale. Part of the Hotel is a Coffee & Cake Shop open from 7am. A 10% service charge is added even for beer orders.

A newly refurbished and repainted terraced pub with a single room and a central bar. Children are welcome. Sky Sports is unusually available here too. The pub car park is accessible from an alleyway on the Debden Road. Darts is played and there have been occasional musical events. Probably food is only being served outside during Covid-19 times. Kitchen being refitted and currently not open weekday lunchtimes.

This is a food orientated pub with a 16th century attached barn serving as a restaurant. It is possible to sit in the bar and drink beers. The pub is now run by a company that runs other pubs in Suffolk and Cambridge. It has recently been refurbished and this description requires updating as the beers may be dfferent too. The car park can get very full as it is smaller than needed to cover the number of table spaces available, Swan Meadow is the nearest public car park. The location is at the northern end of Saffron Walden on the road to the Chesterfords.

An ex-Greene King local that is now a Pizza Restaurant serving a beer though really a restaurant rather than a pub as is revealed by the website name. This is the only drinking establishment in the Thaxted Road area of Saffron Walden remaining. The food quality is excellent with pizzas baked in a large oven at the bar. Bottled Shepherd Neame Bishop's Finger and Morland's Old Speckled Hen are alo usually available.

Venerable wooden-beamed, multi-roomed pub, just off the market square (market days are Tuesday and Saturday). It has welcoming log fires in cold weather and a pleasant patio for alfresco dining and drinking. A mild or dark beer is often available in winter. There is live music at weekends, acoustic music on Thursday, and a monthly quiz. Food is served at lunchtimes.

Saffron Walden is busy on Tuesday and Saturday market days.

Community owned and professionally managed pub purchased fairly amicably from a major brewer in 2020 with the backing of some 500 local shareholders. A Victorian street corner local it sits opposite the former Saffron Walden Railway Station which closed in 1963 following the Beeching cuts. Significant renovation both inside and out has taken place since the community buy out, largely undertaken by volunteers. Fully open inside plus a large quantity of outside seating and tables in the garden and courtyard. Completely free of tie, it serves a range of beer styles exclusively from local breweries (e.g. Buntingford, Moonshine, Pumphouse and Mighty Oak), usually including a stout or mild and craft beers from Wylde Skye, plus a number of ciders, including Simon's from Cambridgeshire.

This pub hosts regular Wetherspoon beer and ciider festivals. It was once the winner of a regional Wetherspoon food award, hosts a Monday quiz night and always stocks draught ciders. Families are welcome and there is a large garden and a covered smoking area.

Plush carpeted bar with a reasonable interesting food menu. Overlooks the golf course though access to the clubhouse requires a code or card. Also the car park has barriers that also need a code to operate and this changes monthly. The Swan Meadow car park is close by should this be a problem.
