Palmer Tavern

Refurbished in summer of 2016, formerly known as the College Arms. Now aimed at the student population, with a large single bar and garden. Dart board, pool table and numerous screens. Loyalty card scheme available for customers giving discount on ales, craft beers & spirits. Sunday night quiz from 8pm. Pay and display car park but free to customers.

Larger-than-it-looks upmarket Greene King outlet and a popular lunchtime destination for local office workers. A 10% discount is applied to all for real ales on Sundays and CAMRA members all week. Nice window seats at the rear 'turret' overlooking the Kennet. Pool table in the top bar. Karaoke on Sundays and Motown special on 3rd Friday of the month.

Re-opened December 2018 after a huge refurbishment to put in a cocktail bar and steak restaurant. It is now owned by Rare Breed Dining who have the Shurlock Inn at Shurlock Row. No cask ale, but a wide range of bottled are stocked including Siren Craft and Meantime. Members lounge on third floor.

Popular craft beer bar, 29 taps serving a variety of Brewdog and guest beers. Third pint flights of 4 beers available. Regular tap takeovers. Food (burgers, hot dogs and wings) features vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices and is available until 10 pm. Beer hall upstairs available for community events including an indie market. Book swap and board games. Beers from the fridge are available for take away.

The former Eldon Arms was unexpectedly re-opened in September 2019 combining a dual role as a tap for the Wild Weather Brewery and as a backstreet pub, being 10 minutes walk from the centre of Reading. While majoring on keykeg craft beers from the UK and overseas there are always a couple of Wild Weather real ales served. Unashamedly modern decor, with various cartoon art prints. Card payments only - no cash.
Foresters Arms

Thoroughly refurbished and re-opened in March 2020, knocking the two bars into one but retaining the old side corridor. The feel is 'traditional pub' and it's been very popular with local residents - the busiest for years. Usually three ales available. The rear garden has been tidied-up and is a pleasant sun-trap on summer evenings.

Small bar located in a parade of shops. It is the only pub within the local radius; a legacy of the Palmer (of Huntley & Palmer biscuits) family's ownership and building of large parts of the area so it is therefore popular with locals as well as the sizeable student population who are resident during term time.

A friendly, down-to-earth Irish pub that is a real community hub. Two plasma screens show Irish TV (often RTE) via satellite with Gaelic football and all the big sporting events; the atmosphere is often lively when a big game is showing, though comfy corners exist for a quieter pint. Regular music nights are held. Food served till 18:00. Smithwicks Red Ale in bottles and Tayto crisps for an Irish pub experience!
George Hotel (Dickens Bar)

Dating back to at least as far as 1423. Some original coaching inn features, remain including Tudor Archways and a very attractive cobbled stone courtyard. The main entrance from King Street still contains some of the original timbers. No real ale but Cobra & Kingfisher beers on keg plus bottled beers available. There is access to the Bhel Puri Indian street food restaurant, whose food can be consumed in the bar area.
Great Expectations

Great Expectations is located in an impressive Victorian Roman-style building in one of Reading conservation areas and had the honour of being opened by Charles Dickens in 1843. Its offers a themed bar/restaurant in the form of a Dickensian London street, serving pub food and light bar snacks. TV screens show major sporting events and a pool table is available. Has installed a small brew-kit which can produce various house beers when a brewer is available. Cask happy hour, £3 per pint at 17:00 to 19:00 Mon to Fri.

Popular drinking establishment which always leaves an impression on visitors with its quirky wooden fixtures and reclaimed wooden floor. As a champion of microbreweries, both local and further afield, rare and unusual ales are frequently found on the pumps. A selection of real ciders and perries is also available. Often busy around the bar area, those wishing for a more peaceful drink can take advantage of the secluded snugs at the back of the pub.

Originally named "The Tanner Arms", Courage sold the pub in 1984 and it became a free house. It's a traditional backstreet pub and its latest incarnation is an outlet for Namastle Kitchen who specialize in Nepalese food. The old part of the interior acts as the traditional pub, with the extension of the bar being the Nepalese restaurant. No real ale but some bottled beer available.
