Olde Murenger House

Olde Murenger House

The title 'Murenger' referred to the tax collector charged with collecting the 'murage' or money for the upkeep of the town walls. The title was discontinued in 1324 and eventually the original stone built Murenger house was demolished in 1816. Today's building has a traditional date of origin of 1530, although some sources place it earlier, some later at 1541. The half-timbered black & white building was first mentioned in 1533 when it was the town house of the Herberts of St Julians Manor (Sir Charles Herbert was High Sheriff of Monmouthshire in 1541). Upstairs, out of public view, are plaster mouldings of intertwined Tudor roses and Spanish pineapples, symbolising the marriage of Henry VIII to Catherine of Aragon. It later appears to have become a pub before becoming a warehouse where it's thought a Chartist leader, John Frost, may have had his drapery business here in 1830. It was an eating house by the mid 1800s and again licensed to sell beer. Old 19th century photos show the Old Murenger House selling Bass ale. Samuel Smith's of Tadcaster restored the pub in the early 1980s and it reopened in 1983. Today it is a characterful well run pub still strongly linked to Newport's medieval past with a decor and ambience to match thanks to Sam Smith's sympathetic treatment of this Tudor building. There's no music or TV but who cares? Just settle down in one of several linked sections and enjoy a pint of a fine Yorkshire brew at a keen price while taking in the cosy dark wooded low beamed Victorian style interior, high back settles (some upholstered), and general hubbub of a traditional pub. Dotted around the walls are pictures depicting mainly local scenes and personalities of bygone days. Note also the collection of books for sale, the proceeds of which are donated to a local hospice.

Pen & Wig

Pen & Wig

22-24 Stow Hill, Newport NP20 1JD

Real Ale Available
Real Cider Available
Garden

Large pub formed out of former business premises. The interior is essentially open plan but is skilfully divided up into a number of areas and levels creating a rambling feel, all enhanced by much use of wooden decor and columns near the ornate bar counter. Live music features and there is a large function room, sometimes referred to as the club, upstairs which is available for hire. The pub attracts a good cross section of customers and has built up a loyal clientele since it first emerged on the scene. It sells prodigious amounts of Draught Bass, it being the last local bastion of this famous Burton Upon Trent ale which was once commonly available in the city centre. The pub is a strong supporter of Welsh breweries while occasionally it sells ales from further afield. A dark ale is nearly always on sale. Look around to see the impressive number of pumpclip stickers arrayed around the upper level of the walls. A choice of Lilley's ciders is also available. At the rear of the premises is a large decked area with a TV which is very popular in fine weather. This area was considerably enhanced during a Covid lockdown in early 2021 when only outdoor service was available. The kitchen/grill specialises in steaks but also offers a good range of food catering mainly for carnivores but with some and vegetarian options. Two sections are laid up for dining but you can more or less eat anywhere. Sunday evening has seen the return of live jazz while open mic night on Thursday is popular. There is a bus stop at the rear for some westbound services.

Tiny Rebel

Tiny Rebel

Occupying premises to the left of the High St entrance to the market, this is Tiny Rebel Brewery's spiritual home and very much a major player in Newport's real ale scene. Fairly minimalist decor, though adorned with the Tiny Rebel motif and various artwork in that now familiar and distinctive contemporary style. Very much focused on real (and craft keg) ale, and appealing to the younger element. A lounge (aka the Cwtch) of sorts is downstairs, with comfortable seating arrayed around low tables. In this area you may view the impressive cellar while a Newport dragon is positioned where the lavatories may be found. The outdoor area has awnings to provide shelter when needed. Freshly prepared food in the form of homemade stone-baked pizzas and fresh Italian pastas available along with a choice of salads, sides and desserts, many ingredients locally sourced. The real ale range nearly always includes four from the host brewery plus a couple of interesting guests sourced nationwide. Be warned the prices are upmarket for the area but if you want quality. ... However, a bargain can be had on Monday when The Cask Ale Club sees cask ales sold at £2.50 a pint. Also look out for other deals: Tuesday Flight Night and Wednesday Snack Attack. The pub is also on Instagram. A note for vegans: all Tiny Rebel's bottled ales are suitable for vegans. Has a frequently updated list of available beers and ciders here: https://www.tinyrebel.co.uk/bars/newport-centre/beers-on-tap/ Be aware that the staff have an eclectic taste in music.
