It is said that Star Pubs are going to spend £350K to turn this into a stylish bar offering food. Expected to be renamed "The Broughton". Modern, spartan but colourful interior on two levels. The lower area is dominated by a huge TV screen which is devoted to every kind of sport. A range of old Edinburgh prints on the central wall helps to add diversity to the atmosphere but the clientele is generally more interested in what’s showing on the TV. There is a separate downstairs bar which is used as a venue for Festival Fringe events. Children are admitted until 8pm.

The interior features an imposing horseshoe bar, bare floorboards, a splendid cornice and a collection of brewery mirrors. Unusually shaped pub up an Old Town close. Named after George Heriot, a famous local 16th century character. Past the bar is a comfortable lounge-type area featuring a long-case clock, photos and pictures, and stained glass Saltire and thistle windows. This late-Victorian locals' bar retains a traditional look and fine ceiling cornices but is now brighter and more open plan. Comfortable green leather armchairs and bench seating complement the extensive wood panelling; a raised area at the back features a mirror and window with the pub logo. The three changing real ales come from a range of Scottish and north-east English breweries. Simple bar snacks are served. Children are not admitted.

Single-roomed, old-fashioned bar by the Water of Leith dating from 1747. It has a real fire and the walls are bedecked with mirrors, prints and beer-related artefacts. A large selection of pumpclips, many from long-lost breweries and distilleries, hangs from the ceiling along with hop bines renewed every harvest. The wide variety of real ales has an emphasis towards smaller breweries - beers are listed on the mirror behind the bar. Children are permitted until 6pm.
