A food-orientated open plan bar whose dark colour scheme is lightened by large picture windows at the entrance. On entering you are met by a series of high tables with stools that leads down a thin passage past the bar to a larger seating area at the rear. The hand pumps are prominently displayed on entering and a large Bass mirror is a feature behind the bar. Visit on a Sunday for roasts (12 - 5) and a quiz night.

Small ground-floor bar in an 18th-century tenement terrace, in the heart of a university area. A stone-flagged floor surrounds the large rectangular counter which takes up at least a third of the room. The colourful, mirrored gantry blends with the cornice, the joins blurred by an extensive collection of pumpclips. The bar is often busy, especially on Tuesday evening when a quiz is held. Children are not admitted.

Once the Black Swan, as is evidenced by a carving on the outside stonework, it possesses one of the few original bar layouts in the city. Two wood-panelled rooms contain an eclectic collection of furniture. The back snug is often booked for parties, with cocktails served from teapots. A special allergy food menu is available. It was the birthplace of Edinburgh & SE Scotland CAMRA on a foggy 16 January 1975 evening. The branch re-visited on 16 January 2015 to mark its 40th anniversary.

Interesting two roomed pub dating from at least 1680. It was renamed after Ensign Charles Ewart born in 1769 who was a member of the Scot’s Greys. He fought at the Battle of Waterloo and single handedly captured the French golden eagle standard. In 1938 he was re-buried in Edinburgh Castle, hence the military theme of the pub, which was renamed as such in that year. Being very close to the castle it is popular with tourists. There is a large painting depicting the Battle of Waterloo and various items of Scottish memorabilia.

SEP 2021 - Two real ales available on 22 Sep. AUG 2021 - APPEARS TO BE NOT SELLING REAL ALE AT THE MOMENT. Under new management. Beware of asking for a half, they have recently just poured 2/3rds and charged accordingly. Prices no longer shown on blackboard. Some details shown may have changed. Uncompromising, but always entertaining, three level craft-beer bar opposite the Odeon cinema and the imposing art deco Lothian House. There are however six cask beers, served from bat-handled taps and these are clearly identified on the beer list blackboard. Occasionally a cask beer may also be gravity dispensed. The entrance level is suited to "vertical drinking", the lower seating area is a little quieter with some sofas while upstairs there are stools with larger tables and seating. There is also the small Alpha Project brewery visible through glass panels. After a few beers, check out the quirky toilet fittings. Children welcome until 8pm, There is no children's menu but items such as hot dogs may suit. Tap takeovers and 'Meet the Brewer' events often held. PRICE ALERT: The maximum size of measure is 2/3rd pint and that is the price quoted. Expect to pay equivalent of at least £5 a pint!

Now owned by Krafty Brewery and operated by Your Local Group, this quirky bar with a wooden exterior has probably the longest above-bar blackboard in Edinburgh. An extensive menu is available and other features include an Innis and Gunn shop and growler fill. There are displays behind the bar giving information about the beers on sale. One of Edinburgh's oldest taverns, established in 1456, it overlooks the historic Bruntsfield Links, which is home to the world’s oldest short hole (36) golf course. No trace of the original pub except for the outside. The interior contains large booths and an imposing central table. No need to ask for water as there are large containers of iced water on the bar. It also contains Scotland's largest collection of golf memorabilia and if you wish to play the golf course you can rent your clubs from here.
