Large one roomed bar with iron pillars and brick walls which resembles the sample cellar at the nearby Caledonian brewery and is subdivided between food and drinking areas. The changing real ales are generally from smaller breweries, and there is an interesting range of bottled beers. The high quality food is popular and is served all day. The atmosphere is usually relaxed but hots up when Hearts are at home. Newspapers are available on Sundays.

A traditional Scottish bar with a magnificent island bar and gantry in dark mahogany that have been fixtures since 1902. The ornate plasterwork and corniced ceiling are outstanding. The room is predominately furnished with large tables and wooden bench seating. There is an extensive menu, with food being served all day in the bar. The separate restaurant is upstairs where real ale can be ordered from downstairs and children over five are allowed. At street level there is a lounge bar with several small and large wooden-topped tables and a couple of seats at the bar. Downstairs is a stone floored bar used for functions. There is a good range of beers, many from smaller Scottish breweries, with one always offered at a very competitive price. Perched at the gable end of a terraced block of colony flats with an ornate exterior which features an eye-catching clock for a hanging sign. Two entrances lead into a spacious, wood panelled room dominated by a large island bar. Very much a locals’ pub, it can be busy when Hibs are at home. Several large screens show football and the jukebox gets regular use. The refurbishment in 2012 included the reintroduction of real ale with three hand pumps featuring prominently at the front of the bar. A separate, large function room is available for bookings.

A narrow entranceway, sometime busy, gives way to a comfortable area with atmospheric seating with low level background music playing. Changed in 2013 from the station bar, with the original theme of the rear ‘Safari Lounge’ being extended throughout the pub. The real ales are mainly Scottish but with the occasional English visitor. An interesting array of food is served from the open kitchen at the front adjacent to the bar. A separate rear lounge can be booked for functions, as can a larger room downstairs. The staff are friendly and it’s popular with locals.

Two-roomed pub in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle with wooden floors, high ceilings and old brewery window panels, which gives it an old-fashioned feel, complemented by candles in the evening. Named after a local school uniform, it features a tiled blue blazer inlaid on the floor. The pub specialises in real ales from smaller Scottish breweries. Snacks are available all day. Being close to theatres and cinemas, the pub stays open later during August for the Edinburgh International Festival and during December. Children are not admitted.
