Formerly The Old Joint Stock Bank, it is a Victorian Grade 2 listed building. Aside from regular and seasonal Fullers beers, the management supports the Locale scheme with two or three guests. The theatre hosts many performances throughout the year and also local comedians and live jazz. Good quality food is served, with now a changing menu.

This Grade II* listed building is a classic example of late Victorian splendor. From the main bar the superb original stained glass windows can be viewed with the M&B logo as it was in 1901. There are ornate Minton tiles and a very fancy tiled staircase. The restaurant is well known for its excellent selection of Thai cuisine. As well as the regular Oakham beers and seasonals, at least one guest ale is usually available. Can get busy on Aston Villa home games.

The pub has a homely feel, Folk club on Friday evenings, Jazz club on some Tuesday evenings. Local road parking only, but with good local bus routes nearby. Closes early if no customers, so ring ahead if intending a later visit. Monthly train spotters group hooks up 1st Wed of the month. Function room at the back holds about 35 people. Guest ales often from AJ's, Goff's, 3D, Froth Blowers, Rock n' Roll, Flipside, Milestone.

At last visit, the disabled access toilet had been removed.

Upstairs there is a large room with a stage for the many live bands who play here. There is live music nearly every night. In the summer the decking area directly out the front provides a great place to sit and chat with friends. The Actress has a late license and is open till 4am on weekends.

There are three hand pulls rotating cask ales and five fonts serving a variety of craft beers alongside a couple of polypins of real ciders on the bar. The one large open-plan room is bustling but not noisy and offers plenty of large tables and small snug areas. It is a roomy but cosy pub with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Sport is shown on plenty of screens but this doesn't dominate the room. As you'd expect for a pub in the heart of Selly Oak it is a mainly student crowd but with a good proportion of locals. In the clubhouse on match days there is a lively, crowded but friendly atmosphere with the home supporters mixing with supporters of clubs from all areas of England and sometimes Wales. The players are often in the bar after the match. Much of the drinking is done whilst watching the match outside, so plastic ‘glasses’ are used. There are food concessions selling hot food and teas. TV screens show rugby results and televised games. There are often musical acts after the game. Match days open 1.00 till 11.00
