Olde Leathern Bottel

221 Barkham Road, Wokingham RG41 4BY

Real Ale Available

Set in the village of Barkham, Ye Olde Leathern Bottel is just a few minutes drive from the pleasant town of Wokingham, yet it feels like a true rural escape. The 17th-century red-brick building, with its stout chimneys and flagstone floors, has offered warm hospitality to weary travellers for hundreds of years. Today, it is a welcoming haven where locals, families and couples can enjoy hearty pub fare and real ales. Its location in the leafy, laid-back village of Barkham puts Ye Olde Leathern Bottel in the heart of the Berkshire countryside but just a stone’s throw from cities such as Reading and Windsor. Country parks, nature reserves, museums and charming historic architecture are all on the doorstep. At first glance the little village of Barkham may appear small and unassuming, with its quiet leafy streets, community feel and acres of woods. Yet the village has ancient royal connections and once supplied the timber to build the roof of Westminster Abbey. Indeed, the name Barkham originates from ‘birch home’ referring to the birch trees on the edge of Windsor Forest. The village’s manor house is legendary, and during the reign of King Edward III, proceeds from the manor went towards the rebuilding of the great Windsor Castle. The current house dates back to the 18th century and is certainly worth seeing on a stroll after lunch. On the topic of lunch, Ye Olde Leathern Bottel is a traditional rural hideaway within easy driving distance of several nearby towns. Its food is quintessentially English and typical pub favourites grace the menu, some of which are served with a cheeky twist. Plush sofas beg to be relaxed in, while the pretty garden is perfect for a sunset glass of wine.

Queen's Head

Queen's Head

23 The Terrace, Wokingham RG40 1BP

Real Ale Available
Garden
Family Friendly

Carol and Peter took over this cruck-framed inn in 2013 and have transformed it. Mainly of Tudor origin, it is situated on a charming terrace 400 yards up from the railway station in one of the oldest parts of town. Being one of Greene King's 'Local Heroes' pubs, this allows for three beers from the Greene King portfolio to be accompanied by three beers from local breweries. The Greene King beers include Abbot Ale, Hardys and Hansons Bitter (badged as Queen's Head Bitter) plus one other. The guest beers from local breweries often include those from Loddon, Hogs Back and Binghams. Beer paddles with three third-pints make it easier to sample several different ales for one visit to the bar. The real fire creates a cosy feel in winter and there is a large, well-designed re-furbished rear garden with a covered area and is the venue for the local Aunt Sally team. There is also additional seating on the south-facing front terrace. Bar snacks are generally the only food served, but occasionally a speciality food night is held. This is normally advertised on the notice board outside the pub along with the food on offer. Children welcome until 8pm. Voted Local CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year 2015, 2016 and 2017, also Berkshire Pub of the Year 2015 and 2016. Awarded Berkshire South East Branch Pub of the Year for 2021.
