The pub stands on the site of a 13th century Augustinian friary, and is named after one of the scholars mentioned in Shakespeare’s King Richard III. A section of the original friary can be seen through the glass floor in the main bar. The Friar Penketh is a large popular pub to the south of the town centre offering breakfast from 8 am and meals throughout the day. It has a long bar with 3 banks of handpumps with a range of beers at Wetherspoon prices.
