The site of this pub was once occupied by the Hope Brewery which had its own pub - The Hope Tap. It is now a town centre Wetherspoons, decorated in their traditional style with the usual trappings. Its proximity to an adjacent live music venue means that it can be especially crowded on occasion in the evening.
Castle Tap

Alongside its changing selection of real ales and ciders, the Castle Tap boasts an excellent range of bottled and canned beers. Re-opened in Spring 2019 following a refurbishment, The Jolly Anglers is a friendly freehouse situated on the side of the Kennet & Avon canal, close to the junction with the River Thames. The owners have installed a Spanish poolside feel in the rear garden. The pool isn't available for punters though - just paying guests in the accommodation! Note winter opening hours - 4pm onwards Mon-Weds, 2pm onwards Thurs-Fri, Midday Sat-Sun

Malmaison

Upmarket hotel bar specialising in cocktails and spirits. No real ale. Keg beers including Brewdog served in 1/2 and 2/3 pint measures and also in bottles. The bar operates independently of the hotel and restaurant, with bar food available from all menus. Low lighting levels throughout with background music noticeably louder in the evenings.

Formerly a Wetherspoons, this pub has had a sympathetic refurbishment with a strong emphasis on televised sport and artwork related to the history of Reading. Located opposite the old red-brick town hall, the name of the pub recalls the Franciscan friars who came to Reading in the 12th century and inhabited the friary where Greyfriars church is now situated.

Large pub on Oxford Road run by Poles, hence the name. No real ale but a wide array of Polish bottled beers at reasonable prices. Regular darts and pool nights. Polish food is available. The jukebox is well-used and is turned up loud - expect singalongs at random times of the day!
