Currently one small step up to access the building and no disabled toilet – hoping to have full disabled access by autumn 2019.
Beefeater Reading Gateway
Off Imperial Way, Reading RG2 0TA
New Build Beeteater Restaurant that has entry into the Premier Inn.
Market House
1-2 Market Place, Reading RG1 2EQ
A new bar situated in the ex-Lloyd's Bank. On multiple levels with toilets on the rooftop terrace (3rd floor) accessible by stairs or via a temperamental lift! The downstairs sports what appears to be a genuine clock from The George Hotel, Twickenham, a pub that's still open. With little apparent irony, the bar is cashless; card payment only. Started out selling cask, lines now removed due to 'poor turnover'.
Haunt (Phantom Brewery Tap)
Unit 3, Meadow Road, Reading RG1 8LB
Taproom for the new Phantom Brewery. The Haunt bar is cashless and will have a selection of street food vendors on Saturdays. Visitors will also be able to play a game of shuffleboard, jump on an arcade machine or play one of two skee ball games.
Milk
Merchant's Place, Reading RG1 1DT
Small bar upstairs hidden away in a side-street. No real ale, though may have some Siren Craft bottles. Big on vinyl records and the like. DJs Friday & Saturday evenings. Comedy night on 3rd Tuesdays. A nice laid-back retreat from the circuit bars nearby.
Allied Arms
57 St. Mary's Butts, Reading RG1 2LG
A town-centre pub dating from around 1828, with two cosy bars entered through the side passage, not the front door. An enhanced range of up to 10 ales is available each weekend. The large walled garden is a popular refuge from the chaos of the town, with patio heaters for colder nights. A wide and interesting selection of music is available on the jukebox. The pub hosts a regular charity quiz. Note that since summer the pub no longer takes cash payments; card only.
Back of Beyond
104-108 King's Road, Reading RG1 3BY
This Wetherspoon pub stands on the site of a ginger-beer factory, later used as a Salvation Army barracks. It has the usual JDW mixture of tables, chairs and booths, and its long rectangular lounge stretches back to look out on the Kennet & Avon Canal. Prints of old Reading adorn the walls. Good-sized outdoor seating area to the rear. Uses stillaging at the expense of handpumps during the JDW beer festivals. Quiz night Wednesdays
All Bar One
13 The Riverside, Reading RG1 2AG
Busy chain bar and restaurant with no real ale but 12 keg taps including Sirencraft Undercurrent. Wide range of food available. Bottled beers from Adnams and cans from Brewdog and Beavertown.
Bel & the Dragon
Gas Works Road, Reading RG1 3EQ
Bar and restaurant housed in a tastefully converted former industrial building on the waterfront of the River Kennet and now ownned by Fullers. The smart, modern bar serves beer from local breweries. A real fire and an eclectic mix of soft furnishings create an atmospheric environment, which can get lively around peak dining times. The separate restaurant offers upmarket dining of excellent quality - drinks can be taken in from the bar. Check out the little free museum a bit further up from the boat which features a fully-restored old gypsy caravan from the turn of the century.
Blagrave Arms
35 Blagrave Street, Reading RG1 1PW
After a thorough refurbishment a few years back, the Blagrave sports a modern interior with a slant towards the late-night crowd, with DJ sets and karaoke being commonplace events (check out their active Facebook group for what's coming up!). An actively gay-friendly venue but all are welcome to enjoy the pub and atmosphere. There are three handpumps at the bar, usually hosting beers from local breweries. Bag in a box cider is sometimes available. Close to Reading's transport hub.
Butler
85-91 Chatham Street, Reading RG1 7DS
Named after Butler's Wine Merchants, who operated from these premises many years ago, this is very much a local pub in the heart of town. Taken over by a consortium after a long period of Fuller's stewardship, there has been an ongoing process of upgrading both inside and out. Ales are from regional and local breweries, including some unusual choices for the area. Live music is a weekly feature and draws large crowds.
Valpy Street Bar
17-19 Valpy Street, Reading RG1 1AR
An independent subterranean restaurant with small bar in the Chronicles newspaper rooms in the heart of Reading. 6 keg beers/ciders from macro brewers such as Meantime. The menu sees modern bistro dishes cooked to a high standard using fresh local ingredients.
