The Fishermen’s Rest gets its name from the infamous Mexico disaster of 1886. The event is still commemorated every 10th December by crews from the local Southport Lifeboat station. The pub was originally part of the Palace Hotel and was renamed after the bodies of the brave sailors and lifeboat crews were laid out in the building. Home to two teams in the Southport & Formby quiz league, the pub is also close to the Sefton Coastal footpath. The "Fish" has a very good reputation for the quality of its home cooked food and advance booking is essential. Quiz night is held every Thursday night from 9pm. The pub has had many famous customers including Clark Gable, and the Palace Hotel was the base for the Hungarian football squad in the 1966 Football World Cup.
