Cricketers

66 Broadwater Street West, Worthing BN14 9DE

Popular pub situated close to Broadwater Green. Beer Festival in July. The current site of the Cricketers PH was the site of a much older building. Evidence suggests that the earlier dwelling was owned by John Monk who left it in his will of 1756 to his son in law, Ayling Shepherd. In 1848 the property, together with the adjacent premises to the north, was acquired by Thomas Gibbard who, in the 1851 census was described as a carpenter by trade from Westerham, Kent. In 1851 Thomas Gibbard had a lodger, Thomas Luff, who was described as a visitor from kirdford in Sussex and a coach wheeler by trade. It appears that by 1853 Thomas Luff was the new owner of the property, for on 31st August 1853 it was Annual Licence Day at the petty session and Thomas Luff, Brewer, of Broadwater applied for a spirit licence for the house now used by him as a beer house. The application was refused, opposing him was Mr Edward Goodyer of the Malsters Arms who was also representing the local rector, parish officers and principal members of the village. To understand the significance of the above it is useful to picture the drinking habits during this period. The Beer House Act of 1830 allowed any householder, who was assessed to pay the "poor rate”, to sell beer from his house on payment of two guineas. Many of the early 18th Century publicans started selling beer from their houses which resulted in heavy drinking. By the 1850’s the heavy drinking of early Georgian times was being discouraged, so maybe Mr Goodyer’s opposition to Thomas Luff’s application for a spirit licence was for moral reasons although one cannot rule out the possibility that it might have meant competition to his own establishment just down the road.

During a renovation in 2014, a 120 year old facade was discovered. It was of a well preserved shop front of pastry-cook and caterer H.W Hale. This former business got into trouble with the council as Mr Hale had been bootlegging cider from Somerset to sell through the bakery. This is a small pub that can easily be missed. Live sport is shown.

This large 2 bar pub is located near the end of the pedestrian precinct. It was built in 1838. There is a fish tank between the two bars. Regular live music. There is a display of miniature bottles, plus many artefacts around the pub, including various types of sewing machines.

This large Toby Carvery is situated on the A27 adjacent to the Lyons Farm Superstores. It has a separate bar area. Opens at 8am for breakfast.

Old House at Home

77 Broadwater Street East, Worthing BN14 9AD

Full name "Ye Old House at Home", the current pub was built in 1925, although a beer house has been on the site since 1832. An extensive re-furbishment took place during September/October 2012 in the Restrooms, Conservatory and Main Bar. There was also a complete redecoration, with oak flooring and new carpets through out. There is now a separate public bar & saloon/restaurant area. Pool and live sports can be found in the public bar.

Corner House

80 High Street, Worthing BN11 1DJ

The current building, a rebuild, dates from around 1895. The original building dates back to at least 1805 and was a much larger structure. The pub had a refurb and name change in Oct 2015. It is a family friendly place to eat and drink, with a large recently extended exterior. Inside it is bright and cheerful, with a log burning stove. The back of the pub has a large glass patio door giving easy assess to the rear garden which is paved and has heaters. It has wooden floors throughout, and some wooden panelling on the walls. Some sofas are placed near the fire. A quiz is held on Monday evenings.

This two bar pub is close to the sea front and Beach House Park. It has a distinctive green tiled roof. Formerly known as the Royal Oak it closed in 2018 and after refurbishment reopened in August 2018 as the Cow & Oak

Number 56 Chapel Road had previously been Worthing Corporation Electricity Board showrooms and the frontage reflects this. It has been a Wetherspoon pub for some years (formerly a Lloyds Number 1) it offers the usual Wetherspoon food and drink selection, with seating upstairs and downstairs. In addition to standard beers it now offers a range of guest ales from local and national breweries. Currently has a new manager who is keen to promote Real ale and expand the offering.

Thieves Kitchen

Set in the heart of Worthing town centre, this large pub serves food all day. There are large tables inside, which is ideal for big groups. The lower bar is spread over two levels. Upstairs is a pool table. Hanging from the ceiling are various styles of chandeliers, supplemented with modern lighting. TV screens show sport. Refurbished by Greene King in August 2108 this pub has reverted to the original name of the Theives Kitchen.
