Wilmslow Rugby Club
Memorial Ground, Pownall Park, King’s Road, Wilmslow SK9 5PZ
It’s a rugby club, of course and also hosts Wilmslow Running Club, home to the Wilmslow Half-Marathon. And they are also a supporter of good beer. It’s located in on King’s Road, Pownall Park, not quite half a mile from Altrincham Road. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the beer selection will most likely be limited to one ale. The bar can sometimes be found to be open on Friday evenings during the summer. The club accepts all-comers, as they have a healthy junior rugby scene, kids are tolerated, too: check with the club. You can join and take advantage of discounts at the bar, and entry to watch rugby union: OK. so it’s not the Premiership. The club has a function room and a smaller, more snug bar, complete with roaring fire, although it’s usually only alight on match-days when the club’s busiest. The bar has 4 hand-pulls and they rotate several LocAles – more often, it’s one from Mobberley, something from Weetwood, a Storm and often a JW Lees. Add to this a Windsor & Eton beer, fetched up regularly from the Home Counties as one of the club members is a director of that brewery. What is a welcome surprise is that all the breweries feature different beers. What is more, the beers are kept well, no mean feat for a club which is only open 4 or 5 sessions a week. There is the usual range of other beers, wines and spirits on the well-stocked bar. There is outdoor drinking, should the weather permit, and there is also a smoking area. Handy for the Carrs and Styal Woods, it’s dog-friendly too.

Busy locals pub about half a mile from Wilmslow centre, presented with a Community Pub award by CAMRA in July 2011. Attracts mixed range of clientele. Sells good range of real ales. Lounge and vault downstairs together with 'Alpine' and 'Cheshire' suite rooms. Characterful local with a number of separate rooms, including a vault, secreted behind the finely etched front windows. The front lounge contains a large, Boddington's mirror (from the good old days!) and a working piano. The rear lounge displays three fascinating paintings of Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Cheshire. The darts room is lined with wooden-panelled benching and the main wall is adorned with an ancient pair of skis. An additional room is available upstairs, and can be used for functions. Previously famous for its Boddies (Boddingtons Bitter) which remained on the bar after the purchase by JW Lees, however the cask version is no longer brewed. Dogs are welcome in the Alpine bar and vault.
