Run by Rockin' Robin since August 2019 when it was renamed the Stag. An historic pub in the town centre. Decorated in mid-grey with beams stripped to their original colour. May be entered from either the High Street or via Bank Street to the room at the rear. Pavement tables and chairs outside if internal rooms not available. Three steps down to the toilets from front room. Up to three handpumps are available on bar in front room. A fire in each room may be lit in winter.

Street-corner alehouse. The upper bar has nine handpumps with the ales mainly from microbreweries. Up to four ciders and perries are served directly from the container and there is a small selection of KeyKeg beers. Beers and ciders are displayed on video screens. Maidstone United football ground is nearby. There are music nights on some Saturdays, jam nights on Tuesdays and monthly vinyl nights on Fridays. It stages an annual beer festival and was voted Kent CAMRA Pub of the Year 2017.

No machines ensure that it is a place for conversation or quiet drink. A popular fun quiz, open to all, is held on alternate Tuesdays, with a local winter quiz league in other weeks. Reputedly the third-oldest building in the town, it dates from around 1430 and has massive timber beams, sloping floors with curious nooks and crannies on two storeys. It was originally a farmhouse within the estate of the Archbishop’s palace. There is a heated and covered courtyard area. The bar contains four hand pumps dispensing ales mainly from Kent microbreweries. Draught cider is stocked, and it sells many bottled beers, including several foreign ones. Entry is via steps down from the old Style and Winch brewery yard and through double doors. The room is stone flagged and has a vaulted ceiling with original cast iron supports. Wooden pews, seating and tables around the room. The corner bar stands in front of the glazed door through to the cool room which houses the racking for 20 casks and cider/perries dispensed by gravity. Over ten Kentish beers, ciders and perries will always be available. Five tap ales. Long list of canned and bottled beers. Gin, vodka, soft drinks and snacks are stocked. A new venture for the Elite Pubs group, being in the centre of a large town, whereas others have been in the country. On entry the restaurant area is to the right with the gas fired pizza oven at the end. Ahead is the bar. To the left is an area for drinking with a few low tables and a high table with high stools which are difficult for shorter or older people to mount. Two large copper tanks and pipework dominate the centre wherein the Czech Staropramen unpasteurised lager is held. Part of the ceiling is covered by wooden planks but the restaurant has an air of elegance with good lighting and furnishings. An open kitchen affords a view of the food being prepared. Takeaway pizzas may be collected from a hatch near the bus stop.
