Duchy Arms

A traditional late Victorian public house forming the corner of Sancroft Street and Courtenay Street. It is underwent an extensive refurbishment 2014. There is a bar to the front and dining area to the rear. The former car park provides ample outdoor seating for the summer.

After an earlier spell as the Jolly Cockney, the pub was repositioned in 2008 as a German pub, with twelve beers from the likes of Budvar, Erdinger, Kaltenburg, Köstritzer black, Krombacher and Paulaner, including several dark lagers and wheat beers. Twenty German bottled beers, German food menu, and regularly has German football on the screens. All in a Victorian pub with two bars separated by central servery, and period features including cornice, columns, bar stillion.

Pleasant and welcoming pub situated in a residential side street a few minutes' walk from the Oval cricket ground. Staff believe the pub to date from the 18th century. Dark wood panelling adorns the walls and the decor features shields and barrels. Brunch is served on Saturday from 12-4 and the normal menu resumes thereafter. Roasts on Sunday until they're gone.

Largely opened up inside and modernised to some extent, this pub retains the atmosphere of a real pub. The bar area on the right is furnished with normal tables and chairs, but through an archway on the left is another room, extending back beyond the servery, with a few tall tables/tall stools and more standard furnishings. This room also contains a rarely seen bar billiards table. Decor is inevitably, and appropriately, nautically themed, with ships' wheels, ships' lamps and seafaring based prints on the walls. Three or four real ales usually available plus a cider on the 6 handpumps. Food is available lunchtimes and evenings every day, and all day at weekends. There's an express lunch menu on weekdays. Quiz night on Tuesdays and live music on Saturdays. Also has accommodation suites sleeping 9-12 people on the upper floors.

The pub is of contemporary design with a glass frontage that can be opened during warm weather. Outside seating is to the front which is covered by an awning during less clement conditions. A nice touch is the interior brass base of an old mash tun set into the floor by the front door. Staff are uniformed and service is taken seriously both for the bar area and the pan-Asian restaurant area.

Once a Charrington's pub, a Victorian corner pub located close to the Imperial War Museum. Was re-opened under its original name in late July 2017 by the local Draft House group which is now owned by BrewDog, having had a number of previous incarnations in recent years. The airy interior has a contemporary feel and there is a spacious first floor roof terrace. Three changing cask beers available on handpump along with a number of craft keg brews on tap.

The Old Mill (formerly The Golden Ball) is a Grade II listed building which dates back the early 19th century re-opened early in 2012 after being substantially refurbished. There are 3 areas on 3 levels with bare brick walls and wooden floorboards. The ceiling in front of the bar is decorated with hops. The beer range normally totals 3 including at least one from a Kent micro-brewery and one from Sussex, plus a real cider from Biddenden. The extensive food menu is served up to 30mins before closing.
