Holmfield

The 14 acre Holme Field estate est. 1807 by Thomas Foljambe, a Wakefield lawyer and speculator. House was built 1833 and estate built up gradually. House and estate were bought in 1864 by Joseph Barker, worsted manufacturer, who enlarged house 1870s, adding stables, entrance lodge and boundary wall, creating gardens and parkland. Built 1833 as Holmefield House, home of Thomas Foljambe, the building was bought 1919 by the corporation from the then owner Alderman W.H.Kingswell, housing for a time a museum upstairs and park restaurant downstairs This became the Holmfield Arms Beefeater with a Travel Inn attached. It is listed as a Building of Local Interest. Most of the grounds were merged into a public park. Hardys & Hansons acquired the Holmfield Arms and it is now in the ownership of Greene-King operating in the Eating Inn style.
