A jumble of interconnected buildings forms the satisfyingly incoherent external view of the 18th-century Tollhouse. Originally named the Crown, then known as the Monkey House due to the then landlord keeping monkeys and then later still named the Tollhouse from the turnpike tollhouse in the garden.
The dining room / lounge has a low, beamed ceiling, and an open fire with bare brick surround. The elegant bar (which is open to the roof, whose supporting structure is nicely picked out) has wooden floors, wood-panelled walls, a fine fireplace, and comfortable seating, with further seating space in a room to left - rather hidden so you may not notice it.
The real ale range is complemented an unfiltered keg lager from Lost and Grounded brewery and a range of international bottled and canned beers.
Major plans for 2020 included installing a microbrewery on a raised display platform where the toilets are currently (through the 'lounge bar', with new toilets in the 'hidden' room to the left of the main bar. As of July 2021 brewing has just commenced.
