Olaf's Tun

Opening hours

Converted from a shop in 2016, Olaf's Tun is easily the most popular real ale outlet in Woolston. A remodelling in 2020 introduced an enclosed cellar room, a more traditional bar and a rustic feel with reclaimed wood cladding. Tables are also made from recycled wood and ironwork. The bar sports six handpumps and the back wall has eight keg taps. Cask beer favours local brewers. Cider is bag-in-box, and a modest range of wines, spirits and UK & foreign bottled beers completes the range. Despite the compact size a small kitchen has been squeezed in providing a range of home-made pizzas and steamed bun snacks. At the front of the pub a few casks have been re-purposed for pavement tables & seating. Many have wondered where the pub's name comes from; a clue is in a large mural on one wall showing a Viking warrior with his longship. One theory is that this was the original name for Woolston when the Vikings had a small fort, or 'tun' here in 994AD which they named after their leader King Olaf I of Norway, hence Olaf's Tun. The Domesday Book records the name as Olvestune in 1086AD and this morphed into 'Woolston' over the years. Sorry, no under 18s permitted on the premises.
