The pub was purchased from Robinsons by long standing tenants, Val Bailey and Alan Critchlow in December 2014. It is now a Free House. Beers from Wincle & Storm. More details to follow. This description AND opening hours, may be out of date-- The Boar is a typical, multi-roomed country pub, much involved in country sports (local clay pigeon and pheasant shooting societies meet here). It is also frequented by walkers and commands excellent views over the surrounding hills. The many-roomed and heavily beamed interior is adorned with brasses, dried flowers and pine settles, but the main feature is the large wild boar skin adjacent to the bar! This is because the pub is named after the legend that the last wild boar in England was killed in the nearby Macclesfield Forest during the eighteenth century. The main, bar room houses a warming open fire in a stone fireplace, with crossed swords and a wild boar bust above. There are also copper-topped tables, a large, pine farmhouse dresser and an old Robinson's dray photo (it must have been a tough job for those horses to deliver up here!). Board games and darts, dominoes and cards are all played. The friendly, Scottish landlady serves a varied range of dishes including wild boar steak and sausages and traditional "stovies". There is no music in the separate dining room. The well-equipped children's room has games, videos and cartoons. Wheelchairs are welcome, with good access to the pub and a handrail in the ladies toilet, but getting to the garden can be difficult. There is a real fire even in summer!
