Mitre Hotel
High Street, OxfordOX1 4AQ
This building has been owned by Lincoln College since its foundation by the Bishop of Lincoln in the 15th century, though parts of the structure are much earlier, including the 13th century vaults which go under the street. The mitre features in the College’s coat of arms. Can reasonably claim to be Oxford’s oldest pub although the present building dates from 1630. The Mitre served as a coaching inn for many years and was very fashionable; it was modernised 1968 but retains many C17 and C18 features. Was a Beefeater restaurant, now taken over by Marston's. The interior retains a multi-room layout mostly laid out for eating the fairly standard pub grub.
Close June 2019 for major building works lasting up to 9 months, and counting.
