Attractive 17th century pub, especially when the outside is adorned with colourful flowering baskets. Designed in a traditional style, the public bar features much dark wood and has a pool room off it. The courtyard, that provides handy cover for smokers, gives access to the garden and play area. The front entrance leads to the cosy lounge, a pleasant room with part given over to dining and from which entry can be gained to the restaurant (note the large knife, fork and spoon around the entrance). The lounge has a large fireplace at one end and a smaller one at the other, both providing focal points particularly when the fires are lit on cold days. A tasteful refurbishment provided a lighter decor with light wood furnishings and bright artwork in the restaurant, sofa seating in the lounge with one section dedicated to a bygone age of the movies. Outside bench seating at the front is popular if you want to sit and watch the world go by. There is an extensive menu offering classic bar meals along with salads and vegetarian and vegan options. Open mike night the first Tuesday of the month, and quiz night on Wednesday. It had a spell as a gastropub but has since reverted to being a more traditional locals’ pub having been taken over by seven members of the local community in 2020. Car parking is in and around the square.
