Red Lion

Opening hours

A traditional and very popular 17th century coaching inn, a place to relax before or after a tour of local Roman attractions. It underwent an extensive refurbishment in Autumn 2014. A new main entrance gives access to a smart bar counter serving adjoining bar and lounge areas whereas before they were separate rooms. The public bar and lounge retain most of their original features and identities. The cosy public bar area features low beams, stonework, an old fireplace and a section of higher level seating. The lounge/diner is similarly traditional with figures of Laurel & Hardy keeping an eye on proceedings from an old stairwell, while you will probably need a reservation to enjoy the intimacy of the adjoining restaurant. Good quality reasonably priced food can be had selected from an extensive menu (12-2.30pm). Meal theme days are Monday (pizza), Tuesday (burger), Wednesday (pie), Thursday (curry). Boules, darts and poker are played, while there is monthly live entertainment. A Sunday night quiz starts at 6pm. The garden at the rear is spacious with room for little folk to play and caters for al fresco dining in good weather, it also features part of an original Roman wall.
