Formerly under the ownership of a large pubco and then put up for sale during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Malt Shovel was saved for the local community and re-opened as a freehouse on 12 Aug 2021. It has been extensively refurbished inside and out. The interior comprises an L-shaped, open-plan room that contains the bar and has a modern-classic, clean, light appearance. The three hand-pulls serve a varying range of real ales. There is a beer garden to the rear and more outside seating in the car park area to the front. There is a ramp at the back for disabled access which leads from the garden. On re-opening, refurbishment of the kitchen was still required and it is intended to complete this in October so that food can also be provided.
