An impressive example of a Sam Smith's total refurbishment. The former post-war A-road makeover has been returned to its original design as a stonebuilt solid coaching inn. The attention to period detail and the quality of the renovation is astonishing - no money has been spared in the process. A central bar is surrounded by separate small rooms with real fires and original features including the underground well with glass cover in the floor and feature lighting. The former hotel dining and meeting room have been cleverly restored to two dining rooms that can be hired for functions. The former bar is now a wing of luxury bedrooms and a central joining section between the two wings accommodates the new toilets.
There is no longer any cask-conditioned real ale but the Yorkshire Stingo broaches no rivals as a Real Ale in Bottle. However the price post lockdown has increased to £10 per 550ml bottle.
Organic Lager and Organic Wheat beer in keg are very passable. Standard milds, bitters and stouts are around £2.20 a pint (increased by a £1 a pint post lockdown).
Plenty of outdoor seating. Mobile phones and electronic devices are banned. So is swearing.
Still worth visiting...!
