Off the beaten track but well worth seeking out, this friendly pub is now part of the Red Mist chain featuring up to four cask beers largely from the Tilford Brewery and Hog's Back. There is a large L-shaped bar with a comfortable seating area completed by a log fire and also an extensive restaurant, a patio and a grassed garden overlooking fields, the only part of the premises where smoking is permitted. The pub was built as an estate workers' alehouse by Jane Austen's brother Edward Knight of Chawton House two miles walk away.
