Royal Oak

Opening hours

A large, open-plan eighteenth-century inn, it has an interior of regional importance and is included in the CAMRA Yorkshire Real Heritage Pubs book (see below). The Black Horse Jazz Band play every Tuesday evenings and there is also live music on Saturday evenings about once a month. The Oak is also one of the folk session venues during Settle Folk Gathering in September. On Settle market day (Tuesdays) there is a small indoor market in the dining room, hence the early opening time. Food is served all day at weekends. The six en-suite letting rooms were fully refurbished in summer 2014. The pub is of architectural importance as follows: extensively re-modelled by Duttons of Blackburn in the mid-1930s to create an idealised Olde Englishe panelled interior for the new breed of motorised tourists, the pub features lavish plasterwork imitation timber. Although the layout was much altered in the mid-1960s, much of the panelling remains in the main bar area and the separate dining/function room, some of it highly decorated. Entry is via a revolving door which is also noteworthy. The photos on this site show some of panelling.
